Urban Circle Productions

UCP is a youth-led music and performance based project in Newport utilising the arts (music, dance and multi-media) to give young people a sense of pride and responsibility through purposeful activity.

Importantly this is activity that they want to do.

The UCP ethos is grounded in the principles established by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Welsh Government’s ‘Extending Entitlement’ and commitments given by the Newport Children & Young People’s Framework Partnership.

The BME Communities First Partnership Board for Newport

There are many issues that face poor communities and are often seen as symptoms or measures of poverty and inequality, notably poor housing, unattractive environments, a lack of commitment to education and anti-social behaviour. The Communities First programme (funded by the Welsh Assembly Government) is designed to give local people the opportunity to work with local agencies to address the local causes of these issues. Communities First is a democratic programme requiring community members to take part and to hold local agencies to account.

SEWREC's own work with Grassroots started with their second tour in Wales (2006). This annual tour has now grown to 9 weeks and includes residencies as far apart as Ringland, Abergavenny and Torfaen.

In keeping with our commitment to being good 'global citizens' we are pleased that SEWREC staff have also been able to volunteer to take part in the Sanganisai Children's Festival in the Masvingo Region of Zimbabwe.

The South East Wales Equality Network (SEWEN)

South East Wales Equality Network logo

The South East Wales Equality Network (SEWEN) first met in April 1997 with the aim of promoting equality of opportunity and good practice in employment throughout South East Wales.

Member organisations are committed to working towards the elimination of discrimination in employment on the grounds of colour, race, nationality, religious belief, national or ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital status, disability, age, social position, or any other improper grounds. Membership is open to any organisation that is interested in furthering the work of SEWEN.

SEWEN meets on a quarterly basis to share good practice and views on local and national developments in equality issues. Specialist speakers are invited to the meetings to give presentations or host workshops, and training events are planned each year.

Member organisations pay an annual subscription based on the type and size of the organisation and to date, all meetings and training events have taken place at no additional cost.

If you are interested in becoming a Member, or would like more information about the South East Wales Equality Network, please telephone 01633 250006 or email to: eva.plajerova@sewrec.org.uk

The Equinex Partnership

The Equinex Partnership was developed to address some of the inequalities faced by disadvantaged people when they are trying to access employment, training and education. It also attempts to address their difficulties in sustaining those opportunites.

The Partnership has focused particularly on people who have been unemployed for a considerable time and people with disabilities, including those with autistic spectrum disorders, sensory disabilities and learning disabilities. The project aims to address those difficulties by developing and piloting new initiatives. All of the Partnership's outcomes are evaluated and used to influence policy at local, national and European levels in the hope that successful activities will be adopted by mainstream service providers.

Switched On

Switched On is a partnership project involving some 22 partners lead by the Novas Scarman Group. Two existing partnerships based in Cardiff and Newport have come together to work together to address common concerns. Almost all partners are relatively small community organisations working in the extremely diverse communities of these two Cities.

The main concerns centre on the very real barriers that exist that prevent members of their communities from accessing opportunities most take for granted. The barriers are very real and very complex and have an adverse impact on work, access to learning, services and other aspects of life. There have been a number of programmes, including some run by the partners in the past, that have had real success in engaging people and demonstrating that the desire to earn and improve exists despite the “hard to reach” label.

This programme seeks to take a longer term view and to tackle the multiple barriers step by step until people reach their goal.

Curiad Calon Cymru Partnership

Curiad Calon Cymru (Heartbeat Wales) is a pan-Wales partnership of voluntary organisations and community groups, working towards the common goal of improving the employment prospects of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, including refugees and economic migrants by combating racism and xenophobia in Welsh society.

One of the partnership’s major achievements was the establishment of its campaigning group called “AGOR” [Advisory Group On Race]. This group includes other organisations and community groups within the Race Equality Sector, which are not part of CCC. This group meets three to four times a year to invite speakers and policy makers so that policy and strategy can be shaped based on strong evidence provided by this group.

Partners also support each other in the recruitment of each others’ initiatives.
